in which I prepare to embark on a journey with some new friends
Off to Paris for the week. For reasons a bit too convoluted for me to be bothered to go into at this time of night, bargain bin Martha Jones* and spacesuited!Ten are coming with me:

"Martha Jones!"
"Doctor! We're going to Paris! I can't wait to- er... why are you wearing a space suit? Oh no, has something diabolical happened to Paris's atmosphere?"

"No, nothing wrong with Paris's atmosphere, it's got bags of the stuff."
"Then why..?"
"Well, I'm the Doctor, I don't have to make sense. It's part of my charm."

"And anyway, when I take off the helmet-"
"Wow, so even Time Lords get helmet hair, then. And... you're looking a bit... over-exposed?"
"Don't worry, I'm not regenerating. I'm putting it down to wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff."

"Okay then, let's go to Paris! Hey, what's that?"

"Aha! That, Martha, is why I brought the helmet!"
Oops. I hope I can revive her before we leave.

* Tip: When buying action figures in London, go to Forbidden Planet, not Hamley's. Hamley's is what's technically known as "a bloody rip-off". Also it has a gender-essentialist store layout. Ptoo.

Things beginning with S
So Star Trek was shiny and lots of fun (although personally I would have liked a few more female characters who weren't just there to be love interests/sources of angst for the men; thankfully I am not the only one), but it made me wonder where I'd heard Simon Pegg do a Scottish accent before, and then I realized it was in one of my favourite Big Train sketches:
The silliness! I LOVE IT.
Oh yeah, and then there was the SPN finale which had

Mark Kermode reviews Star Trek
The whole thing is worth watching, but my favourite bit is about 5 minutes in when he casually mentions the existence of Kirk/Spock fanfiction, not in a "oh those crazy (women) fans" sort of way, but in order to support his argument that at its core, Star Trek was and is about the relationship between those two characters.♥

"I hope she dances better than she welds, I mean look at that, her mix is all to cock"
Yeah, so, apparently, explaining maths to ten-year-olds fills me with an intense and geeky joy (prime factorization! Divisibility rules! Simplifying fractions! It's all so very cute); I'm still not convinced I would make a good teacher though - I am rubbish at asserting my authority.
Um. THIS. This may actually be the definition of win. Robert Webb in a SHINY LEOTARD, with BOOBS and MAKEUP and 80s HAIR, doing Flashdance, and pwning pretty much everything ever:
I just. I can't stop watching it and giggling. He's so game - it's marvellous.

He also convinced me to watch "Basic Instinct 2" and "Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death"
See, here's the thing with Mark Kermode: I have never in my life had a desire to see a Nazi-ploitation film, but I watch his review of The Reader, wherein he references the work of "classy sleazy film-maker" Tinto Brass and now... I sort of have a desire to see a Nazi-ploitation film.
I mean, Salon Kitty still sounds kind of appalling, just... interesting and appalling now.
